Buying certified organic in Delhi NCR is easier than it was and harder than the marketing suggests, because the word appears on a great deal of produce that carries no certification at all. The channel you buy through matters more than the shop you pick.
The channels, and what each is good for
- Weekend organic and farmers' markets. Several run regularly across South Delhi and Gurugram. Best for seasonal vegetables and for actually meeting the seller. Ask for the certificate; a certified grower will have it and will be pleased you asked.
- Subscription vegetable boxes. Weekly delivery, usually seasonal, usually with a stated certification status. Good for consistency, weaker on choice.
- Organic sections in large-format retail. Widely available and easy to verify because packaged goods carry the Jaivik Bharat mark and a certificate number. Prices are highest here.
- Online organic retailers. Convenient, and the certification claim is easiest to check because it is written down. Check whether it covers the whole catalogue or a subset.
- Direct from a producer. Best price, most effort, and only practical for a few categories such as grains, pulses, honey and cold-pressed oils.
Verifying a seller in under a minute
Look for the Jaivik Bharat logo, which FSSAI administers for products certified under NPOP or PGS-India. Then find the certification body and the certificate number, and check that the claim covers the product you are holding rather than the shop generally.
"Natural", "chemical free", "farm fresh" and "pesticide free" are not organic certification. They are not regulated organic terms at all.
Where the premium is worth paying
If you are buying selectively rather than switching everything, the usual reasoning is to prioritise produce you eat with the skin on and items you consume daily. That is a defensible heuristic rather than a proven ranking, and it is the one most people find workable.
What certification does not buy you is a nutritional upgrade. The evidence for meaningful nutrient differences is mixed and the effect sizes are small next to the difference between eating vegetables and not. Buy organic because you want the production standard, not because you expect a different vitamin count.
A note on restaurants
A restaurant claiming organic sourcing should be able to name the certificate holder. Most cannot, including us, which is why we do not make the claim. Our ingredient list and its published values are on the nutrition page, and that is the thing we can stand behind.
